What is our project about?
industriAll and Ceemet are strongly committed to working together to attract people to the industry and to ensure high quality work-based learning for both young people and adults.
Throughout the EU member states, industry is working hard on trying to illustrate the broad importance of VET and work-based learning and the exciting career pathways found in our sectors. Both employers and trade unions across Europe are taking action, including going into schools, developing media campaigns and recruitment initiatives.
We think there are a lot of good examples and best practices that we should talk more about. Therefore, we have created this joint web platform to show how Ceemet and industriAll members across Europe are engaging students and stakeholders in the quest for excellent VET that leads to careers in the metal, engineering and technology industry.
The metal, engineering and technology industries range from fabricated metal production to the ICT industry, including among others the automotive, aerospace and defence, machine tool and electro technical sectors. Companies in the MET industries produce goods and solutions most of us use on an everyday basis.
Ceemet and industriAll believe that good quality cooperation between companies and schools, and in particular work-based learning, is a central factor in excellent vocational education and training.
Quality VET with a strong component of work-based learning not only enhances a person’s employability and employment prospects through the acquisition of skills and competencies that are needed on the labour market, it also supports personal development and leads to a recognised qualification.
Together with educators, industry has a shared responsibility in ensuring that the knowledge and the skills, both hard and soft, that young people learn at school and in university can be put into practice “on the job”.
Promoting employability and narrowing the skills gap – the importance of work-based learning in vocational education and training.
A number of shortcomings are frequently exposed in studies and industry feedback on education and training systems around Europe. These include:
• a shortage of the right skills
• insufficient cooperation between schools and industry
• a lack of students choosing vocational education • difficulties updating teacher skills and teaching methods
• an absence of a lifelong learning culture
Together with the effects of the economic crisis, these problems mean that it is virtually impossible for young people in some countries to find work while at the same time some companies in Europe face acute difficulties finding skilled workers.
Improving the quality and status of vocational education and training is often about educational reform at national level. But Social Partners also have an important role to play.
We need to become better ambassadors for work-based learning and for careers in our industry. We want to show that technical education and training with work-based learning leads to many different exciting careers in different industries. That it is an educational pathway that spans all education levels and a career that is attractive for both men and women.
